WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released a 600-plus page report entitled, “Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes,” which sought to review over 800 peer-reviewed scientific studies. In the process, the committee reached dozens of conclusion on a range of health impacts.
The report can be viewed here.
Gregory Conley, President of the American Vaping Association, a nonprofit that advocates for sound and sensible regulatory policy towards vapor products, commented on the report:
“The bottom line for the American public is that the main conclusions of this report are consistent with those reached by respected organizations like the Royal College of Physicians and Public Health England. The committee’s findings also fall in line with FDA Director Scott Gottlieb’s nicotine strategy, a key element of which involves adult smokers switching to lower risk products. In the wake of this report, it is more apparent than ever that true leadership is needed in public health to ensure that adult smokers have access to truthful information about the benefits of switching to smoke-free products.
“Undoubtedly, there are inherent flaws in the report that reveal biases and misperceptions that are held by the authors. The committee ignored or downplayed critical research on toxicology, relative risk, and youth usage. However, we are pleased to see an organization like NASEM make a clear statement that the health of adult smokers will improve if they quit with vaping.”
About the American Vaping Association
The American Vaping Association is a nonprofit organization that advocates for fair and sensible regulation of vapor products, otherwise known as electronic cigarettes, with the goal of maximizing the number of adult smokers who use these products to quit smoking. The AVA was founded by Gregory Conley, a consumer and industry advocate with a long track record of advocating for vapor products dating back to 2010.
We are dedicated to educating the public and government officials about public health benefits offered by vapor products, which are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid nicotine or nicotine-free solution and create an inhalable vapor. The AVA is not a trade group and does not speak for any particular businesses, including our industry sponsors.
